Greatest Matches Ever: 2016 (Q3)
Welcome to our Greatest Matches Ever series for Q3 of 2016, covering July, August, and September. Only matches with a rating of **** (four stars) and above will be included, as rated by the highly respected Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Dave Meltzer publishes.
This may have been the greatest quarter in the history of pro wrestling when it comes to great matches, and that’s not an exaggeration. There were three 5-star matches, and several more that were just a shade below that. The reason for such a strong Q3 was simply a slew of so many great shows that peaked in this time frame, as we had New Japan’s G1 Climax, PWG’s Battle of Los Angeles, WWE’s Cruiserweight Classic series, CMLL’s Arena Mexico shows, and some really strong PPV matches from ROH, WWE, and NXT. Add that all up and you have a truly epic three months for wrestling fans.
This quarter also contained the single best match I’ve seen thus far this year (Kenny Omega vs Tetsuya Naito), and some breakout performances from certain performers in what has been a banner in-ring year for the business.
Every effort is made to make this list as complete as possible, and promotions from all over the world are included. We’ll also do our best to watch each match ourselves, add our brief commentary, and include links (when possible) to where you can watch the matches yourselves.
