Jay White vs Kazuchika Okada
January 4, 2019
Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan
NJPW WrestleKingdom 13
Excellent match, on the shorter side, still a fantastic display of athleticism and psychology from both guys. WrestleKingdom was all about building the future, with the likely departure of Kenny Omega, Young Bucks, Cody, and more. Jay White figured into New Japan’s plans, and he proved tonight he’s worthy of the upcoming push.
Kazuchika Okada can afford the loss, as he had a classic IWGP world title run in 2017, and is probably the most over Japanese wrestler on the roster. He proved here why he’s still the best, getting a superstar reaction and making the latter half of this match on par with almost anything you’ll ever see in a match this length. He did his running dive over the barricade, of course, this time also toppling booker Gedo. The sequence near the end, with an innumerable amount of reversals and attempts at the Rainmaker, was top notch. White got the clean pin and the audience seemed shocked. It was the right call.
