Kenny Omega vs Kazuchika Okada
August 11, 2017
Sumo Hall in Tokyo, Japan
NJPW G1 Climax (Day 18)
What else is there to say about these two, other than they’re the two best wrestlers in the world and have put on the best 3-match series in the long and storied history of pro wrestling.
Kenny Omega is like two Shawn Michaels rolled into one, Kazuchika Okada has had maybe the best year any world champion ever has. Their first match, at the Tokyo Dome, was the greatest match I had ever seen. Their second match, at Dominion, somehow managed to actually top it, and still remains the best match I’ve ever seen. This third match here was too short (25 minutes) to top those epic masterpiece matches, yet it’s still the best 25-minute match you’ll ever see. I had it at *****1/2.
The execution here was flawless, featuring world class dropkicks, knees, clotheslines, and suplexes that will make you cringe because they look so realistic. Omega is a man possessed to prove he’s the best in-ring performer ever, and I do believe he will achieve that title (if he hasn’t already) one day. Everything was perfect here, from the heat, the near falls, the big moves, the timing, the psychology, the pacing, and best of all, it was a different kind of match from their previous two. In fact, some of you may even prefer this one over those because it’s shorter and slightly faster paced.
Okada simply needed a draw in order to advance to the finals of the G1 tournament, so they teased going 30 minutes. Omega had to win in under 30 minutes, and he had never beaten Okada before, so fans were hanging on every near fall. Just awesome, and it goes without saying this is a must-see!
