Kyle O’Reilly vs Kushida
May 21, 2016
Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan
NJPW Best of the Super Juniors XXIII – Day 1
Hot damn, this was good in a way you rarely you see these days. What made this match special was Kyle O’Reilly’s use of innovative mat work and MMA submissions, Kushida’s working of O’Reilly’s left arm, and they didn’t rely on high flying or near falls to build heat towards the end.
Instead you got moved you’ve never seen before, such as Kushida getting flown at by O’Reilly outside the ring and somehow turning it into an armbar. I mean… what the Hell, that was awesome. He also did a Kimura off the top rope that looked dangerous and was a great spot to work the arm. This was nonstop twenty minutes of intensity and brutality, and both should be commended for working a different kind of match that worked to perfection. These two have a tremendous amount of respect for each other, with good reason.
