Michael Elgin vs Tomohiro Ishii
March 9, 2018
Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan
NJPW New Japan Cup
On paper, Michael Elgin and Tomohiro Ishii seem like perfect opponents. Both have a similar style, being shorter, stockier, and working a stiff style as power wrestlers. And wouldn’t you know it, they ARE perfect opponents for each other, because this match rocks.
It was the expected chop fest, and the forearms were brutal. Yet they worked a smart match, with far too many dangerous spots thrown in. One particular superplex was unreal, where Elgin lifted Ishii up straight from the mat. While Ishii did slightly jump from it, it still took an incredible amount of strength on Elgin’s part to pull that off. There was also a similar spot off the top rope where Ishii practically landed on his head. It could’ve been disastrous, and you could see Elgin whisper something to Ishii to check if he was okay. Very, very scary.
Also, they popped up at one-counts for some pins at just the right time, which added greatly to the drama. Just an excellent match worked to perfection.
