Roman Reigns vs AJ Styles
May 22, 2016
Prudential Center in Newark, NJ
WWE Extreme Rules
WWE World Heavyweight Championship; Extreme Rules
This match was simply incredible. I’d go ****3/4 and I don’t see how it could’ve been rated any less. Phenomenal crowd heat from start to finish, with AJ Styles showing why he’s the best performer in the country and Roman Reigns was right there with him.
Fans were brutal on Reigns, and no matter how many great spots he did, they rode him hard with merciless chants. Funny how the guy they say can’t wrestle has been having ****+ matches for the past two years. When you’ve got guys like Finn Balor, Ric Flair, and Chris Jericho saying how great Reigns is in the ring, it makes these chants towards him laughable because Reigns absolutely can wrestle, and he did an awesome job of it here.
Half the match was spent outside the ring with some excellent brawling. There was interference from the Usos and Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson, but it was pretty even and it didn’t feel like a cheap finish (which was perfectly timed, as were all the spots in this match).
Show this match to anyone who’s given up on WWE and they can eat it. This was everything that was right about pro wrestling today. Just imagine if WWE had hired Styles years ago like everyone was telling them to. Seth Rollins made his return after the match in what got the biggest pop on the show. Best of all, he made his return without any entrance music, which made it far more effective than if he had.
This match is only on the WWE Network, but here’s a clip:
