Royal Rumble; Winner Gets Title Shot at WrestleMania

When it comes to booking and match layout, the 2018 Royal Rumble was one of the better ones in company history.  It was also placed in the middle of the card, so that the women’s Royal Rumble could be the headliner.  The crowd was hot for everything and there were plenty of surprises and memorable spots in the match.

Surprise returns came from Hurricane Helms and Rey Mysterio, the latter of whom got a huge pop (funny how he was booed just a few years ago when fans saw him in the Rumble instead of Daniel Bryan).  From NXT we got Adam Cole, who also got a big pop, and Andrade Cien Almas following his greatest match in company history the night before.  Other items of note were the strong reaction to Elias, Kofi Kingston’s pancake stunt, and of course Shinsuke Nakamura throwing out Roman Reigns to win got an enormous pop from the Philly crowd who were surely expecting Reigns to take it.

After the match, Nakamura said he wanted AJ Styles, which also got a strong reaction because people have been wanting that for months.  Unfortunately their match at WrestleMania was a big disappointment (through no fault of their own), but that’s another story.
