Zack Sabre Jr vs Tomohiro Ishii
January 4, 2019
Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan
NJPW WrestleKingdom 13
British Heavyweight Championship
You’d think a brawler (Tomohiro Ishii) and technical wizard (Zack Sabre Jr) would clash styles, but as their G1 match proved, the reality is anything but. They played to their strengths and exploited the obvious differences between the two, with Ishii lifting the relatively light Sabre like a feather and throwing him around. Sabre would try his mat based wrestling, and Ishii would just slap it away, and occasionally match him move for move. Sabre’s chops had little effect, while Ishii’s had devastating results. It all worked together very well, although this match, like most matched on this Dome show, was too short.
Not crazy about the delayed sell spot, in which Sabre took a superplex, but before he sold it, got in one dig at Ishii. It’s like, if you get in a car accident, are you going to suddenly have the energy to rescue your child before passing out? It’s quite ridiculous, although many things in wrestling are, and it does get heat. Also some good near falls in this one, although I think Dave Meltzer was being too generous with his rating on this one. I’ve seen better matches in WWE that get less of a rating. It’s like he’s biased towards New Japan or something (ya think?).
